TRADE MINISTER: IMPORT OF PROCESSED PORK STILL ALLOWED

Jakarta, April 29 (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said here on Wednesday the government had only banned import of frozen pork and pigs while import of processed pork was still allowed.

"Import of processed meat is not banned. Only import of raw pork is banned," she said.

She said Indonesia had so far never imported pigs but only frozen pork. "We do not import pigs but only frozen pork," she said.

She said the swine flu virus only lived in raw pork while pork that had been processed well was safe for consumption.

"The carrier is in the meat so if it is already processed it is supposed not to be there. If it is already processed, cooked the virus no longer exists," she said.
