TOUR DE SINGKARAK BICYCLE RACE TEAMS START WARMING UP
Padang, W Sumatra, April 29 (ANTARA) - Several foreign bicycle racing teams of Tour de Singkarak started warming up by running through the main streets here before competing from April 29 to May 3, 2009.
The foreign bicycle racers among other things paddling their bicycles from the city center of Padang, capital of West Sumatra province Wednesday through main road to Minangkabau international airport or BIM about 23 km from the city centre.
A number of world-class bicycle racing teams have arrived here and will compete in four segments, namely Padang-Bukittinggi (92.3 km), Bukittinggi-Sawahlunto (85.1 km), Sawahlunto-Danau Singkarak (90.2 km), and Lake Singkarak-lake Kembar - Lake Singkarak (188 km).
In addition to ten local team, the organizing committee has invited teams from 15 countries to the event that include New Zealand, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Iran, Australia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, and Qatar.
The Tour de Singkarak bicycle racers will cover a total distance of 455.6 km and compete for a total cash prize of US$60,000.
Team Time Trial (ITT) will also take place in Padang for 4.4 km on Thursday.
In the meantime, James Hallyward, head of the provincial culture and tourism affairs office said that the presence of foreign racers could trigger the National Sports Committee or KONI to revive the West Sumatra racers.
The cycling race which aims to promote tourism in West Sumatra will be lustered up by a music concert, a food festival, and a fun bike event.
Indonesian musician Dwiki Dharmawan at the opening function of the event, will among others sing "Friends Around the World" as a special song for such a prestigious occasion, apart from some local songs. Another song will include "The Soul of Minangkabau".
Tour de Singkarak would combine bicycle racing with tourism as the result of cooperation between the provincial administration, the Culture and Tourism Ministry, Indonesian Cycling Association or ISSI and businessmen.***
