MINISTER CALLS FOR ORDERLY COMMEMORATION OF LABOR DAY

Jakarta, April 29 (ANTARA) - Manpower minister Erman Suparno called for an orderly and peaceful commemoration of Labor Day on May 1 here on Wednesday.

"We hope businessmen and workers would mark the day with thanksgiving and social activities such as blood donation, training or tree planting in factory areas," he said in a press statement.

He said after meeting with members of the National Tripartite that he would allow to observe the occasion, but hoped that it be done orderly and peacefully.

Businessmen had also voiced a similar call. They reached agreement to hold commemoration with positive social activities.

"What we are worried about is action by members of workers' unions that are not included in the National Tripartite. We do not agree if they would force workers to take to the street," the chairman of the Association of Indonesian Businessmen (Apindo), Hariyadi B Sukamdani, said.

Regarding calls for a national holiday on May 1 he said Apindo members did not agree, because there are already 172 national holidays a year in the country.

"Too many holidays may reduce productivity," he said.
