SIX COUNTRIES OBSERVE EUROPE DAY IN SURABAYA
Surabaya, Apr 29 (ANTARA) - Four countries will be observing Europe Day at the French Cultural Center (CCCL) in Surabya on May 9, 2009.
In a press release CCCL press attache in Surabaya Pramenda Krishna A. said Wednesday the six countries, which will set up information counters at the CCCL, are Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, and Spain.
Several staff officials of some of the participating countries will attend and provide information, or answer questions from the public about their countries.
There will also the screening of films and quiz sessions to test the knowledge of the public of Surabaya and environs on European countries and their culture.
"The program lasts only a day, namely on May 9, and open to the general public free of charge," Pramenda explained.
In the meantime, the establishment of the European Union was started with the Schuman Declaration on May 9, 1950. Robert Schuman is a French great statesman, and one of the founders of the European Union.
In 1957, the signing of the Rome Agreement marked the wish of the founding countries to establish a free economic common market.
The agreement was later followed up by the Maastrich Pact in 1993 to give birth to the European Union and at the same time marking the formation of political communities in the continent.
May 9, 2009 is the 23th anniversary of Europe Day set the heads of state and government during the holding of the Conseil Europeen in Milan in June, 1985.
