KPU REMINDED TO SUPERVISE FIXED VOTER LIST DATA MORE TIGHTLY
Jakarta, Apr 30 (ANTARA) - Home Minister Mardiyanto reminded the General Elections Commission (KPU) at district/municipal levels to pay greater attention to and supervise more tightly the entry of data into fixed voter lists for the upcoming presidential election.
"It is the KPU offices in the regions which will handle the data electronically. Therefore, officials tasked with the work should not make any mistake in entering data into the fixed voter lists," he said here on Thursday.
The minister hoped the process of passing on data in fixed voter lists for the presidential election from regional KPUs to the central KPU electronically would be closely supervised so that the lists would not contain any mistake such as duplication of voters data.
In updating the data in the present fixed voter lists, the KPU could ask for the assistance of regional governments. The minister said the regional governments had been instructed to help and support the KPU for this purpose.
Eligible voters not inluded in fixed voters lists used in the recent legislative election should be registered in the voter lists for the upcoming presidential election.
If there were duplications of voters in the presidential election, they should be scrapped, so should voters with unclear status such as active military or police personnel, he said.
"This is not the task of the government, but the general election organizing committees. We only give suggestions to the KPU on the way to improve the voter lists.
Furthermore, the minister said, it was much better for district heads and mayors to help KPU in familiarising the people with voter lists for the presidential election.
The minister said the familiarization efforts should be made not only at village level but also at neighborhood (RT) level, so that it could be easily accessed by the community.
The process of data updating of voter lists had been carried out since April 10 up to May 10, 2009, while the announcement of the community's response would be done from May 11 up to 18, 2009.
On the occasion, the minister also said the central and regional governments could help KPU only at the KPU's request. Without KPU's request, the government was not in a position to give a hand at all because it could then be regarded as an act of governmental intervention.
