RI STILL COMMITTED TO ERADICATING IPR VIOLATIONS: MINISTER

Jakarta, May 1 (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said Indonesia remains committed to eradicating violations of intellectual property rights (IPR) to protect the interests of investors engaged in the country's creative industry.

"We will explain them (the United States Trade Representative/USTR) that we have a commitment and ask them to give us a chance to carry out an action program we have made to protect IPR," she said here on Friday.

She said she was disappointed about the USTR's decision to lower Indonesia's status from "watchlist" to "priority watchlist".

"We are disappointed about the change in our status from 'watchlist' into 'priority watchlist'. In fact, we have enjoyed the status of 'watchlist' for two years," he said.

She said a national team in charge of eradicating violations of IPR would improve their work program in order to regain the status of 'watchlist'.

"We have taken various steps under the coordination of the national team. We will improve it (the work program) again. If their report is still not good we will improve it," she said.

She said the government was serious about handling violations of IPR in the country by involving various agencies including the police, the law and human rights ministry and the industry ministry.
