Lee stresses family values in overcoming crisis
SEOUL, May 4 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak said Monday a "healthy" family
is the centerpiece of government policies, pledging to help reduce divorces and
suicides by accelerating efforts to revive the economy.
In his biweekly radio address, Lee reiterated that his government's policy
efforts towards promoting a healthy family and accelerating economic recovery
will be centered on creating as many new job opportunities as possible.
The president expressed deep regret over the mushrooming of on-line communities
abetting collective suicides, as well as at the rising divorce rate in the
country.
"It is truly lamentable that there are even Internet sites instigating suicides.
Nothing can be possible if we live with a determination to die," said Lee.
"These days, our families are in a crisis everywhere. Divorce and suicide rates
are at the highest level among OECD countries. Even more worrisome is that there
is a growing number of people who commit suicide on impulse. Our nation has
already overcome much tougher difficulties in the past by encouraging and
cooperating with each other."
Lee's remarks came as police recently toughened crackdowns on on-line communities
suspected of helping people share tips on how to commit suicide as well as find
partners to form suicide groups.
"The government will do its best to keep families healthy. Above all, (the
government) will work harder to create and retain new jobs, viewing them as
indispensable to a healthy family," said the president.
"I'll ensure that the government's supplementary budget will be carefully spent
to increase new job opportunities," he said, referring to a parliament-approved
extra budget of 28.4 trillion won (US$21.8 billion).
Noting May is Family Month, Lee described the family as a "fountain" of courage
and energy.
"Korea's unique family spirit has been the driving force of the nation's
miraculous growth over the past five decades. Nothing can be dreaded as long as
familial love exists," said the president.
