INDONESIA, BRAZIL TO FOCUS ON DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES

Mataram, May 4 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Brazil have agreed to focus their agricultural cooperation on commodities such as soybean, palm oil, fruits, livestock and bio-energy.

The agreement was reached at the third meeting of the Indonesia-Brazil Consultative Committee on Agriculture in Senggigi tourism resort in West Lombok, on Monday.

The Indonesian delegation to the meeting was led by Yusni Emilia Harahap, the agriculture minister's expert staff for international and inter-department relations.
The Brazilian delegation meanwhile was led by Lino Colsera as a senior advisor of the Secretariate for International Relations in Agribusiness of the Brazilian ministry of agriculture, livestock and food.

The Indonesian delegation was also supported by Indonesian ambassador to Brazil, Bali Moniaga.

According to the bureau of foreign affairs of the ministry of agriculture the meeting agree to settle the memorandum of understanding between Embrapa (an agriculture research institute of the Brazilian government) and department of the Indonesian ministry of agriculture concerned.

Brazil wished to get detailed explanation about quarantine regulations with regard to that country's interest to export its agricultural products to Indonesia.

The meeting was aimed at discussing cooperation in the field of agriculture held every year in turn between the two countries.

The first meeting was held in Jakarta in 2007 while the second one in Brazil in 2008. The third meeting was again held in Indonesia from May 3 to 5.

It has been held in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, in view of the province's potential for the development of agricultural commodities such as soybean, jatropha, mangosteens and cattle breeding. which is the target of the cooperation between the two countries.

The cooperation was based on a memorandum of understanding signed by Indonesian minister of agriculture Anton Apriyantono and his Brazilian counterpart Reinolds Stephanes.

The MOU was signed during President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's visit to Brazil on November 18, 2008.

The visit resulted in development of strategic partnership between the two countries, the agreement of which was signed by Indonesian foreign minister Hassan Wirajuda and his Brazilian counterpart Celso Amorin.

The two countries have also signed cooperation in the field of energy, besides in the agricultural field.
