AUSTRALIA BUILDING 2,000 SCHOOLS IN INDONESIA

Mataram, May 5 (ANTARA) - The Australian government has donated around A$387 million (around Rp3.2 trillion) for the construction of 2,000 elementary schools across Indonesia.

"Thousands of schools built by the Australian government will be completed at the end of this year," visiting Australian Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Assistance Bob McMullen MP said here on Tuesday.

McMullen made the statement at a function to dedicate Gerung secondary school SMPN-5 in Lombok Barat district which was built with Australian assistance.

On the occasion which was also attended by West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Governor M Zainul Majdi, McMullen said Australia had been cooperating with the Indonesian government and the people for more than three years in an effort to increase learning opportunities for Indonesian children, especially in remote areas.

The construction of SMPN-5 in the Sasak mountain area for disabled students was funded by the Australian government with A$168,165 (around Rp1.3 billion).

McMullen said he had made a commitment to cooperate with the government to improve education in Indonesia, because according to him, a country would be known not only from its mining and agriculture progress but also from its education quality.

The Australian Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Assistance is on a four-day visit to West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) from May 4-7, 2009.

NTB provincial administration public relations chief Andi Harianto said here on Monday that McMullen was visiting the province to dedicate a number of projects carried out with Australian government assistance.

He said McMullen would also visit the site of National Program for People's Empowerment (PNPM) at Tapen village in West Lombok, and the site of sanitation and clean water facility at Kuripan village in the same district.

McMullen is also scheduled to dedicate Australia-Nusa Tenggara Assistance for Regional Autonomy at NTB development planning board (Bappeda) office.
