PRESIDENT TO TEMPORARILY DISCHARGE ANTASARI

Jimbaran, Bali, April 5 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will soon discharge Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Chairman Antasari Azhar who has been named a suspect in a murder case, Presidential Spokesman Andi Mallarangeng said.

"We are still waiting for a letter from the national police chief or from the KPK. The president will take a decision based on the law. A suspect will be discharged temporarily and if proven guilty, he or she will be dismissed officially," Andi said here on Tuesday.

He said the official notification on the status of Antasari could come from the police or from KPK which stated that its chairman had been named a suspect so that the president could issue a decision on temporary discharge.

On the allegation that the case is a political conspiracy aimed at 'shaking' Yudhoyono, Andi said that the matter should be fully left to the police to investigate.

"For us, the case should be left to the police to handle it professionally and fairly. Police should reveal and settle everything involved. It should not be linked to politics but uncovered based on evidence. We hope everything will be revealed in court," Andi said.

Antasari Azhar was detained by the Jakarta Police on Monday (May 4) after he was named a suspect in the murder last March of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, director of PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran.

Antasari was questioned for seven hours as a witness in connection with the murder case at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police's general crime building.

Jakarta police chief Inspector General Wahyono said on Monday that there was enough evidence to name him a suspect. "We will wait how the process will go on," he said.

Regarding his client's naming as a suspect, Azhar's lawyer Farhat Abas said it was based upon statements from other witnesses. "It is not clear. They went directly to witnesses and other evidence," he said. ***4***
