Hyundai Engineering begins work on Qatari plant
SEOUL, May 5 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., South Korea's
third-largest builder, said Tuesday it has started construction of a desalination
and electric power plant in northeastern Qatar.
Ground was broken Monday for the US$2.07 billion plant in Ras Laffan, an
industrial complex about 80 km north of the Qatari capital, Doha, the builder
said. The plant is scheduled for completion in April 2011.
When completed, the plant will have a power generating capacity of 2,728
megawatts and a fresh-water production capacity of 4,500 tons a day, Hyundai
Engineering & Construction said.
In May last year, the deal was subcontracted to Hyundai Engineering &
Construction by lead contractor Mitsui & Co. of Japan, which won the order from
state-run Qatar Electricity & Water Corp.
