BANDUNG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS STAGE ANTI ADB RALLY

Bandung, West Jav9a, May 5 (ANTARA) - University students grouped in the Anti-ADB Alliance rallied here Tuesday to demand the dissolution of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) which is holding an annual board of governors meeting in Bali May 4-5.

The students also expressed objections to land seizures, the contract-based workers recruiting system, and outsourcing. They called for the creation of jobs for all young people.

They said that agricultural and plantation development using ADB funds was never intended to improve the welfare of rural farmers.

In fact, the number of farmers owning land had decreased, the students said.

They also reminded the government not to be trapped in what they called "neo-imperialism" which could cause a country to fall into a pit of economic problems.

They said ADB was not different from other international institutions such as IMF and the World Bank which had contributed to the financial crisis in the US and other countries.

These financial institutions were only helping imperialists through projects disguised as poverty eradication and development programs, according to the students.

The ADB annual meeting is being participated in by around 3,500 representatives of 67 countries, including ADB members, government leaders, central bank governors, finance ministers, academicians, private businessmen, and NGO activists.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono when officially opening the ADB Annual Meeting at Nusa Dua, Bali, on Monday (May 4) said the ADB annual meeting was important because it takes place when the world is experiencing an unexpected deep economic recession.

This year, the ADB's Board of Governors meeting was crucial to demonstrate that ADB had the capacity and was flexible to meet the needs of its member countries at present and in the future, he said.
