HOUSE SPEAKER: PRESIDENT NEEDS TO PREPARE ANTASARI'S REPLACEMENT
Jakarta, May 5 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono needs to prepare a substitute for Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Antasari Azhar, House Speaker Agung Laksono said here on Tuesday.
Laksono made the statement after Antasari was named a suspect in the murder of PT PRB director Nasrudin Zulkarnaen.
"If the president later dismisses Antasari from the KPK chairmanship, it should be accompanied by a proposal on his replacement," Laksono said in the Parliament building.
Jakarta Police's Criminal Investigation Unit had earlier named the KPK chairman as one of nine suspects in Nasrudin's murder.
But Laksono also said President Yudhoyono could only dismiss Antasari if the latter was named a defendant.
With Antasari's present status as suspect, Laksono said, the former should not be suspended but temporarily discharged by the KPK.
"According to law, one who has been named a suspect in a certain case should be suspended by the related institution and be dismissed by the president after he or she is named as a defendant," Laksono said.
The House speaker added that the mechanism to select a substitute for Antasari should include a fit and proper test at the House of Representatives (DPR).
"It has become a convention so far and therefore the House's Commission-III will follow it up if the time is ripe for it to do so," Laksono said.
Meanwhile, presidential spokesman Andi Malarangeng said here on Tuesday that President Yudhoyono would soon discharge Antasari from KPU.
"We are still waiting for a letter from the national police chief or from the KPK. The president will take a decision based on the law. A suspect will be discharged temporarily and if proven guilty, he or she will be dismissed officially," Andi said here on Tuesday.
He said the official notification on the status of Antasari could come from the police or from KPK which stated that its chairman had been named a suspect so that the president could issue a decision on temporary discharge.
On the allegation that the case is a political conspiracy aimed at 'shaking' Yudhoyono, Andi said that the matter should be fully left to the police to investigate.
