US DELEGATION TO ATTEND WOC IN MANADO
Jakarta, May 6 (ANTARA) - The US government is sending a delegation of more than 40 representatives to participate in the World Ocean Conference (WOC), scheduled for May 11-15, 2009, in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
A US Embassy media release made available to Antara on Wednesday said Mary Glacken, Deputy Undersecretary for Oceans and Atmosphere of the Department of Commerce, would lead the delegation, which is to be made up of top US-based researchers, scientists, technology experts and educators.
"I am very excited to have so many outstanding scientists and experts join me in representing the US at the World Ocean Conference and Coral Triangle Initiative Summit in Manado," US Ambassador to Indonesia Cameron R. Hume said.
The US envoy said they had an 'A-team' of ocean experts, drawn from government agencies, higher education institutions and the
private sector, who have the expertise to address important scientific issues related to oceans and preserving marine biodiversity.
Other delegation members will include California Environmental Protection Agency Secretary Linda S. Adams, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Assistant Administrator Dr. Richard W. Spinrad, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography Dr. Tony Haymet, the Smithsonian Institution's Sant Chair of Marine Science Dr. Nancy Knowlton, Google, Inc.'s Chief Technology Advocate Michael Jones, and NOAA Chief Scientist Dr. Stephen R. Hammond.
The United States Government is supporting the Coral Triangle Initiative with a $40 million, five-year program for improving the management of marine and coastal resources in the region.
The US Agency for International Development and the
National Oceanic and NOAA, as the U.S. federal agency focused on the conditions of the oceans and the atmosphere, are a key part of this effort, and already partners of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and other Indonesian institutions.
