Korean cuisine showcased in Washington to promote globalization

By Hwang Doo-hyong
WASHINGTON, May 5 (Yonhap) -- More than 100 American journalists, food columnists
and restaurant business people attended a luncheon here Tuesday organized to
showcase traditional Korean cuisine.
The gathering at the Willard InterContinental in downtown Washington was the
first of two events to introduce Korean cuisine to local opinion leaders and food
critics as part of the South Korean government's ambitious project to globalize
Korean foods.
The lunch featured tri-colored wheat wraps and fresh ginseng cold plate, lobster
japchae noodle made from sweet potato flour and a variety of vegetables, braised
short ribs and vegetable brochette, bibimbap with song-i pine mushrooms and
shrimp balls, ginseng wine and ginger ice cream and fresh fruit.
On Thursday evening, the Korea Foundation will host a dinner party for American
political and business people at the Willard InterContinental, said foundation
president Yim Sung-joon.
The dishes for the parties were prepared by Ahn Jung-hyun, owner of a premium
Korean restaurant, Wooriga, which has been acclaimed by world-renowned Michelin
three-star French chef Pierre Gagnaire, Yim said.
"We've invited leaders and recognized experts in the culinary field to create the
momentum for Korean food to take its rightful place among the major cuisines of
the world," he said.
The event was co-sponsored by the Korea Foundation and the Korean Embassy in
Washington and organized by the Corea Image Communication Institute.
The Lee Myung-bak administration has embarked on an ambitious project to promote
Korean foods and beverages as a means of boosting food exports and upgrading the
country's image abroad.
The Lee administration recently launched a special Korean cuisine globalization
support group made up of government officials, entrepreneurs and scholars with
the aim of promoting Korean foods and beverages, which have yet to gain due
recognition abroad despite their unique flavors and nutritional benefits.
