OBSERVER: AKBAR MOST APPROPRIATE AS YUDHOYONO`S RUNNING MATE
Jakarta, May 6 (ANTARA) - A political observer, Bachtiar Effendi, said former Golkar Party chairman Akbar Tandjung was the most appropriate figure to be Yudhoyono's running mate in the upcoming presidential election.
"Akbar deserves to be considered to pair up with Yudhoyono compared with other Golkar cadres," Bachtiar told Antara through his cell phone here on Wednesday.
He made the remark in response to the statement of Golkar Party chairman Jusuf Kalla that Golkar would not forbid any other party cadre to become the ream mate of the another party's presidential candidate.
Bachtiar said many Golkar cadres were capable of being nominated to run for the vice presidency such as Aburizal Bakrie, Fadel Muhammad and Akbar Tanjung, most of whom were seen as the most appropriate figures.
However, he added, it was doubtful that Yudhoyono wanted to pick Akbar Tanjung as his running mate to compete with other contestants in the presidential election on July 8, 2009.
As a Islamic political analyst at the Islamic University of Syarif Hidayatullah, Bachtiar predicted that Akbar's chance to be Yudhonoyo's running mate was slim because the vice chairman of the Democrat Party, Ahmad Mubarok, had said that Yudhoyono would likely pick a professional to be his running mate.
He further said the final decision was in the hand of Yudhoyono, as it was his prerogative right to pick the figure he liked most to accompany him later.
"The most important to know is that at the state of nomination Yudhoyono feel secured and peaceful with his choice," Bachtiar said.
