FORESTRY POLICE DETAIN FIVE ILLEGAL LOGGERS IN NTB
Mataram, Indonesia, May 6 (ANTARA) - Forestry police in cooperation with regular police personnel detained five illegal loggers at Mambang village, Gunung Sari sub district, West Lombok District, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province, here early Wednesday morning.
The forestry police officers detained five illegal loggers and seized 2.5 cubic meters of wood allegedly cut from a protected forest at Sesaot, Narmada sub district, West Lombok District, Andi Pramaria, head of the NTB forestry office's planology and forestry security unit, said here on Wednesday.
"The logs were transported by two pick-up cars without having required legal documents, and from the types of the wood we believe that they were taken from the protected forest," he said.
The five arrested illegal loggers, among others identified by their initials of M and S, were intensively grilled by officers of the NTB forestry office, he said/
A suspected owner of the illegal logs was currently being looked for by the authorities, he said.
According to Andi Primaria, the arrest was part of routine operation against illegal logging activities in NTB.
The province set up a special team called "NTB Raya" (Greater NTB) in 2007 to fight illegal logging activities which are rampant in several forest areas including in Tanjung, Pemenang sub district, West Lombok West, and Sesaot forest.
The local police and military personnel support the Greater NTB operation, he said.
Last April 18, the Greater NTB team head arrested four illegal loggers at Sesaot protected forest. One of the four detainees was a police officer from the Crakranegara police precinct , the NTB provincial capital of Mataram.
According to data from the NTB forestry police office, nine security officers had been detained during January 2008-May 2009 period, for involvement in illegal logging activities. ***
