AUSTRALIA, JAPAN CONTRIBUTE TO RI MIGRANT WORKERS EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

Mataram, Indonesia, May 6 (ANTARA) - Australia and Japan have financially contributed to Indonesia's migrant workers empowerment program in four provinces, namely West Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

"The contributions from Australia and Japan for the empowerment of Indonesian migrant workers (TKIs) and their families in the four provinces amounted to Rp25 billion," National Board for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BP2NTKI) chairman Moh. Jumhur Hidayat said here on Wednesday.

Jumhur came to West Nusa Tenggara's provincial capital of Mataram to take part in a discussion on "Public Expenditure Analysis and Capacity Enhancement" (PEACH) moderated by by World Bank consultant Adrianus Hedrawan on Wednesday.

The BP2NTKI chief said the funds from Australia for the empowerment program were disbursed through Australia Nusa Tenggara Assistance for Regional Autonomy (ANTARA), while those from Japan were through Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF) and World Bank.

Jumhur said the empowerment of TKI in their original provinces was intended to improve access of migrant workers and their families at information management and financial service.

According to him, BP2NTKI has the role to lead and to coordinate with Program Management Committee (KPP) which was made up of representatives from BP2NTKI, AusAid, World Bank/JSDF, and national commission and representatives from Java and Nusa Tenggara.

The empowerment program for TKI and their family members will be implemented for two years from April 2009 until March 2011.
