SOME 53 COUNTRIES CONFIRM PARTICIPATION IN WOC
Manado, Indonesia, May 6 (ANTARA) - Some 53 countries have confirmed participation in the World Ocean Conference (WOC) which will be held in Manado, May 11-15.
"So far, 172 participants from 53 countries have confirmed their presence in the conference," Dr. Deisy Mantiri, head of the WOC organizing committee secretariat, said here on Wednesday.
The United Nations and NGOs have also informed that they would send 10 delegates to the WOC.
"Several participants of the WOC and the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Summit have arrived in Manado, but most of the delegates will be arriving on May 10," Dr. Mantiri said.
Next Sunday (May 1), Garuda Indonesia will serve a special flight from Singapore to Sam Ratulangi International Airport to carry foreign delegates, she said.
The WOC organizing committee has invited 121 countries to attend the international conference.
"We estimate that around 65 percent of the invited countries will take part in the conference, and it?s quite encouraging," she said.
Some 70 foreign journalists and 200 Indonesian journalists will cover the international event.
She said US Foreign Secretary Hillary Clinton had informed that that she canceled her participation in the WOC, but she promised she would send a speech to presented in the conference.
"She could not come to the WOC, but she has promised to send a DVD recorded speech to be played in the Summit," she said.
Australia has confirmed that the country would send a minister to the conference, she said.
Six heads of state of the CTI member countries have confirmed their participation in the Summit.
They are Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Solomon Island Prime Minister Derek Sikua, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, Timor Leste Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Manado will also host an International Symposium on Ocean Science, Technology and Policy, on May 12-14, a Global Ocean Policy Day on May 13, and an International Ocean Science, Technology and Industry Exhibition, May 11-15, coinciding with the WOC.***
