KALLA OBTAINS NU LEADERS` BLESSINGS
Jakarta, May 6 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla who is also chairman of the Golkar Party said here on Wednesday he had received the blessings of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) leaders to run for president later this year.
"I have their blessings," he said after a meeting with leaders of NU, one of Indonesia's largest Muslim organizations.
Kalla came to the NU office along with the chairman of the Golkar Party faction in the House of Representatives, Priyo Budisantoso, and party figure Aksa Mahmud.
The meeting , held behind closed doors, was led by NU chief Hasyim Muzadi.
"Thank God, I, as an NU member and a presidential candidate, I have been able to meet with NU leaders to ask for their blessings," he said.
During the meeting Kalla told the NU leaders about recent political developments in the country and what he would do in the future. "We wish to ensure the preservation of strong national unity and cohesion and the enhancement of economic self-reliance by developing the people's economy." he said.
Kalla said only through economic self-reliance would the Indonesian nation be able to win a respectable place in the world.
NU chairman Hasyim Muzadi meanwhile said he was glad that an NU member would participate in the presidential race.
"Thank God, an NU member will run for president. Previously, he only ran for vice president and now for president. We wish him success and God bless him," Muzadi said.
Before meeting Kalla, the NU chief had received the chairman of the United Development Party (PPP), Suryadharma Ali.
The Golkar Party has named Kalla as its presidential candidate for the July 8 election with former military chief Wiranto from the Hanura (People's Conscience) Party as his running mate.
The presidential election will be held about three months after the legislative elections last April 9. So far President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democratic Party is leading the vote counting in the legislative elections beating Golkar Party and also former president Megawati's Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP). The official results of the election is scheduled to be announced by the General Elections Commission (KPU) on May 9. ***
