AUSSIE MINISTER COMING TO JAKARTA TO MAINTAIN GARUDA ROUTE
Brisbane, May 6 (ANTARA) - Northern Territory (NT)'s Minister for Asian Relations Christopher Bruce Burns will meet Indonesian officials in Jakarta on Friday (May 8) to discuss the closure of Garuda Indonesia airline's office in Darwin, an Indonesian official said.
The Indonesian officials Burns would meet were State Enterprises Minister Sofyan Djalil, Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal, and Garuda President Director Emirsyah Satar, Arvinanto Soeriaatmadja, second secretary at the Indonesian consulate in Darwin, said here on Wednesday.
"During his visit in Jakarta, Mr Chris Burns will be accompanied by advisers and officials of NT," Soeriaatmadja said.
Burns and his entourage were expected to arrive in Jakarta on Thursday (May 7) and the meetings with the Indonesian officials would be held on Friday.
Burns who is also NT's minister for business, tourism, trade and defense affairs, recently said he had personally approached the concerned Indonesian officials and Garuda's management in an attempt to maintain the nearly 30-year presence of the Indonesian flag-carrier in Darwin.
"I will do anything to make Garuda return to Darwin," he said in a press statement on Garuda's decision to close its Denpasar-Darwin route as of April 22, 2009.
Burns had talked to State Enterprises Minister Sofyan Djalil, Indonesian Consul in Darwin Harbangan Napitupulu, and Garuda Indonesia General Manager in Darwin Syahrul Tahir. He had also sent a letter to Garuda President Director Emirsyah Satar.
The NT minister said Garuda had contributed significantly to the good relations between Darwin and Indonesia, and the Northern Territory government was doing everything possible to enable Garuda to continue its route to Darwin.
Previously, the Indonesian tourism and culture ministry's foreign affairs director, I Gde Pitana also, regretted Garuda's decision to close the Darwin-Denpasar route following the global economic crisis, saying it could be counterproductive for Indonesia's efforts to attract 480,000 Australian tourists this year.
