Hynix, Numonyx, Phison announce alliance on NAND chip controllers

SEOUL, May 7 (Yonhap) -- Hynix Semiconductor Inc., Numonyx BV and Phison
Electronics Corp. said Thursday they have signed an agreement to collaborate on
developing controllers for NAND flash-memory chips used in MP3 players and
digital cameras.

Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Under the agreement, Hynix of South Korea, Numonyx, a joint venture between Intel
Corp. and STMicroelectronics NV, and Phison of Taiwan will work together on the
NAND chip-making technology, the companies said in a joint press release.
"Through this collaboration, the three parties expect to enhance their technology
leadership of NAND flash solutions," said Choi Min-goo, a senior vice president
at Hynix in the press release.
The collaboration would allow the three companies to produce NAND chips with
features such as doubled memory-interface performance, flexible partition
management and improved security options.
Products combining the jointly developed controllers are expected to be available
before the end of 2009, according to the release.
