Lee's special envoys pay visit to Thai prime minister

BANGKOK, May 7 (Yonhap) -- Two of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak's special
envoys paid a courtesy visit to Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva in Bangkok
on Thursday, seeking Thailand's cooperation in Lee's plan to hold a summit with
the leaders of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The envoys -- Huh Tae-yeol and Cho Hae-jin -- delivered a letter from Lee to
Abhisit and asked him to attend the summit, which will be held on South Korea's
southern resort island of Jeju May 31 through June 2. The Thai leader, who holds
the ASEAN presidency, accepted the request, according to the envoys.
At the meeting with Huh and Cho, both from South Korea's ruling Grand National
Party, Abhisit was quoted as saying, "Thailand will strengthen its relations with
South Korea through a bilateral summit and economic ties."
Lee and Abhisit are scheduled to serve as co-chairmen of the Jeju summit, which
will commemorate the 20th anniversary of relations between South Korea and ASEAN.
ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the
Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
