PRESIDENT SIGNS LETTER SUSPENDING ANTASARI FROM KPK CHAIR
Jakarta, May 7 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has signed a presidential decree on the suspension of Antasari Azhar from his position as chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
Presidential special aide for legal affairs Denny Indrayana said at the presidential office on Thursday that the decree was now only waiting to be administratively processed by the State Secretariat.
"The letter for Antasari's suspension has just been signed by President Yudhoyono, and the next process is the letter's numbering by the State Secretariat," Indrayana said.
He said the presidential decree to suspend Antasari was effective as soon as it had been signed by the president, namely Thursday (May 7).
Indrayana said the president had needed some time to study the draft of the decree because the law on KPK was different from other laws which regulate the dismissal of state officials involved in criminal cases.
Commenting on the legal implications of Antasari's suspension, Indrayana said the KPK's leadership was collective in nature so the void left by Antasari would not have an impact on the Commission's performance.
He said, if in the further legal process, Antasari's case was referred to a court or he had become a defendant, President Yudhoyono would issue a decree to dismiss him as KPK chairman permanently.
