KALLA, WIRANTO, MEGAWATI STILL DIVIDED ON PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDACY

Jakarta, May 8 (ANTARA) - Jusuf Kalla, Wiranto and Megawati Soekarnoputri reached no accord on the presidential and vice presidential candidates issue at their Friday meeting but they agreed to continue building communications in the framework of a grand coalition.

"We, I, Kalla and Wiranto, agreed to continue building communications," Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri said after meeting with Golkar Chairman Kalla and the People's Conscience Party (Hanura) leader Wiranto.

Megawati said that at the meeting they discussed the continuation of then agreement to form a grand coalition in parliament they signed together recently.

Asked on the possibility of the grand coalition to put forward two or only one presidential and vice presidential pairs, Megawati said the two possibilities existed.

She said that her party was still following developments in the counting of votes from the April 9 legislative elections.

The same thing was also said by Golkar Chairman Jusuf Kalla. He said that there could be two or only one presidential pairs for the grand coalition in the upcoming presidential polls on July 8, 2009.

"We are of the view that we still have time to discuss it, but we are ready to continue working together," Kalla said.

He also said that the grand coalition had up to now remained solid. He also allayed fears that the PDIP would ally itself with the Democratic Party.

For Jusuf Kalla, the meeting with Megawati was his fourth since the process of the general elections 2009.

Jusuf Kalla, Wirantao, Megawati Soekarnoputri, and Prabowo Subianto (chairman of Gerinda Party) and some other political parties recently signed an agreement to form a grand coalition in Parliament.

The party leaders said in a joint statement that the so-called grand coalition was aimed at strengthening political cooperation in the national and regional parliaments.

They rejected suggestions the pact was a move to gang up on Yudhoyono, presidential hopeful of the Democratic Party which according to the temporary vote country, is the winner of the recent legislative elections.***
