FLOODS INUNDATE 12 VILLAGES IN E NUSA TENGGARA
Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara, May 8 (ANTARA) - Flash floods swept through 12 villages in East Nusa Tenggara province on Friday, forcing thousands of people to evacuate to higher grounds.
By Friday afternoon, the flood waters in a number of areas in Belu district reached a height of 1.5 meters after Benanain River overflowed, spokesperson for the East Nusa Tenggara provincial administration Maria Sara said.
The 12 flood-hit villages are Sikun, Fafoeh, Oenmaen, Rabasa and Rabasa Rahaerain in Malaka Barat subdistrict, Weliman, Forek Madah and Lamur in Weliman subdistrict, and Lawalu, Fahiluka, Limana and Railar in Malaka Tengah subdistrict.
Maria said the local authorities sent medical workers to the flood-affected areas on Friday to help evacuees.
There was no immediate report of casualties or material damages.
Remigius Asa, head of the Malaka Barat subdistrict which was hit the hardest by the flood said about 2,000 flood victims sheltered at the office of the district head were in dire need of food and medicines.
Benanian is the longest river in Timor island. It flows from Kupang district to Timor Tengah Selatan, Timor Tengah Utara and Belu districts.
Belu district was hit by deadly flash floods on May 31, 2001 when more than 100 people perished.***3***
