ASEAN+3 ADOPT JOINT EFFORT IN DEALING WITH PANDEMY THREAT

Jakarta, May 8 (ANTARA) - The Health Ministers of ASEAN+3 (Japan, South Korea, and China) adopted a joint effort of the region in the special ministerial meeting on Influenza A (H1N1) in Bangkok, May 7-8, 2009.

The joint effort laid down in the Ministerial Joint Statement, the ASEAN secretariat in Jakarta said Friday covered continued application of the national plan on facing the pandemy, and effective communications in dealing with the pandemy, as well as effective communications with the public to prevent panic and social disruption.

"This area has received support for our joint effort in dealing with the new form of this influenza," ASEAN secretary general Surin Pitsuwan.

The health ministerial meeting has strengthened efforts and joint capacity in adjusting the main measures of community health proteciton, including decisions relating to the spread and mobilisation of anti-virus drugs as well as logistics, he said.

ASEAN held trainings to ensure the effectiveness of the distribution of medical supplies, medical and other equipment in facing a pandemy. The meeting also encouraged technology transfer with regard to the production of anti-virus drugs and vaccines.

The joint effort in the area like forming a hotline among the health officials, joint investigation and enhancing research of cases as urged by the ministers.

A number of plans had also been drawn up to further help ASEAN in capacity building and research.

"China will cooperate and provide technical assistance needed by the ASEAN member countries when fighting against the H5N1," Chinese Health Minister Chen Zhu said.

China, he said, expressed readiness to arrange as soon as possible training courses on rapid technological diagnosis. China, he added, will also hold an international conference on influenza A (H1N1).

In the meeting remote dialogs through video with the US Disease Prevention and Control Center. And recorded messages of Mexican Health Minister Jose Cordova will also be presented.

In the meantime, the World Bank expressed preparedness to help the countries in the area in increasing capacity in helping the countries in the region in boosting their supervisory and controlling capacity in facing the H1N1.
