T V Sriram
Colombo, May 10 (PTI) An Indian field hospital, which has
already treated over 4000 Tamil civilians fleeing the
LTTE-held areas, is being shifted to Vavuniya where about 1.5
lakh displaced persons have been camped.
The Sri Lankan Health Ministry said the Indian field
hospital situated in Pulmoddai will be moved closer to the
welfare camp in Manik farm area in Vavuniya.
India and Sri Lanka have agreed on that the Indian
medical team based at Pulmoddai in Eastern Trincomalee would
shift its base to Vavuniya where about 1.5 lakh Internally
Displaced Persons (IDPs) are located.
A 60-man team would arrive in Vavuniya from India shortly
to replace the first contingent, which had been at Pulmoddai
for about two months.
A 52-member Indian medical team, which opened an
emergency health centre and a hospital to treat the displaced
Tamil civilians coming from the war zones in Wanni towards
late March, is returning home after a successful mission.
The Indian team had comprised of 8 physicians and
surgeons were largely successful in attending to the patients
and treated many of them.
Apart from this fully equipped hospital, India has also
gifted medicines and medical supplies worth Sri Lankan Rupees
100 million to the Government of Sri Lanka to be used in
hospitals in the North and East, he said. PTI TVS
