Yemeni-German annual negotiations commence in Berlin

SANA'A, May 11 (Saba) -The annual negotiations between Yemen and
Germany commenced on Monday in the German capital of Berlin.

Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Abdul-Karim
al-Arhabi and Head of Middle East and Regional Development Policy
Division (BMZ) in Germany Andreas Gies chaired the negotiation
session.


The two officials discussed defining trends of allocations to the
development's support provided by Germany to Yemen for the period
2009-2010. The support is estimate at € 73 million.

The two sides also discussed topics concerning strengthen
cooperation between the two friendly countries and future German
support of Yemen in the fields of water, basic and secondary
education, vocational training and reproductive health.

The meeting dealt with German support to good governance,
governmental efforts to strengthen factors of investment environment
and supporting efforts of Yemeni government in institutional reforms.


Al-Arhabi is scheduled to hold talks with German Minister for
Development Cooperation and Germany Minister of State for Foreign
Affairs in addition to review with German businessmen Yemeni
facilitations in the field of investment .

German annual assistance to Yemen is about €73 millions, €50
millions of this support are granted to the country in the form of
financial aids and € 32 millions are given as technical aids.

In 2008, German granted Yemen about €15 millions allocated for
carrying out different projects in several governorates of the
country. The projects focused on financing water, protecting
historical cities and supporting a number of private sector's
projects.

Yemeni- German relations witnessed in 2000 unique improvement
through which Germany provided Yemen extra support estimated at DM
13 million.

In 2001, Germany decided to joint Yemen besides four developing
countries to the program of reducing poverty rates to half in 2015
in which Yemen obtained about €13 million from Germany.


In 2003, Yemen and Germany signed an agreement on German supports
amounted to € 36 million ,of which € 22 millions as financial
cooperation and € 14 million were allocated for technical
cooperation .

During 2002-2003, Germany's supported Yemen with $ 450.000 for mine
action program via UN development program in addition to supplying
concerned authorities with trained dogs for this purpose. The dogs'
annual budget reached $5, 00,000.
