US Carmaker Ford To Shut Down Manufacturing Plants In India - Report

By Shakir Husain NEW DELHI, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- US carmaker Ford Motor Co will shut down its two manufacturing plants in India as part of a business restructuring, Indian media reported on Thursday. The company will shift its focus to selling imported vehicles in the Indian market, news agency PTI reported. Ford India has invested more than US$2 billion in its manufacturing facilities in the states of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat with a capacity to make 610,000 engines and 440,000 vehicles per year, according to information on the company's website. Ford, which entered India in 1995, will be the second US carmaker after General Motors to cease manufacturing in the challenging market dominated by domestic and Asian automakers. -- BERNAMA
