Doctor says injured Kasab was capable of using Ak-47
Doctor says injured Kasab was capable of using Ak-47
Mumbai, May 15 (PTI) A doctor, who had treated Pakistani
gunman Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab Friday said despite injuries
sustained in left hand, he (Kasab) could have fired at people
from Ak-47 rifle.
Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said a doctor
testifying that Kasab could have handled AK-47 rifle was a
significant statement because the accused could have raised a
probable defence that he could not have fired at people
because of such injuries.
"Kasab had sustained injuries on his hand but despite
the wounds he could have easily handled AK-47 rifle", Dr
Venkat Ramamurthy told prosecutor Nikam.
The doctor was asked by judge M L Tahaliyani to take the
rifle and feel its weight to opine whether it can be handled
by a person having injuries like the one sustained by Kasab.
Another doctor, Vikas Kesari, said he had allowed police
to interrogate Kasab in Nair Hospital. Kasab had told police
how he had killed Amarsinh Solanki, navigator of 'Kuber', a
boat through which he and others arrived in Mumbai.
But Kasab had neither signed the panchnama concerning
Solanki's death nor had he given his thumb impression on the
medical document, saying he had sustained injuries in hand.
The doctor, however, said in cross-examination that he
could not assign any reason why police did not take Kasab's
thumb impression if he was not willing to sign the panchnama.
Dr Ramamurthy, Dr Kesari and Dr Yogita Delkar identified
Kasab in the court saying he was same person whom they treated
when police brought him to Nair Hospital on the day of the
terror strikes.
"He is the one who was brought to Nair Hospital when I
was on duty in early hours on November 27," Yogita Delkar,
Chief Medical Officer of Nair hospital said pointing at Kasab.
The doctor told prosecutor Nikam that she had prepared
Out Patient Department (OPD) papers of Kasab and wrote his age
as 25 years.
Later, in cross examination, she told defence lawyer
Abbas Kazmi that she wrote Kasab's age as 25 years based on
his physical appearance.
To a question by prosecutor, the doctor said indoor case
papers of Kasab were prepared by hospital staff Kedar Joshi.
This question was asked because there is over writing of
Kasab's age in indoor case papers....25 years has been struck
off and instead 21 years has been written.
Earlier, witnesses have told the court that Kasab has
given his age as 21 years to police in the hospital.
"This explains why over writing in Kasab's case was
done," Nikam added.
In another development, police officer Bhaskar Kadam
said he found a fake Identity card of a Hyderabad college
bearing photograph of slain terrorist Abu Ismael from the
Skoda car used as an escape vehicle in the terror attack case.
He said the I-card was issued in the name of a fictitious
person, Naresh Varma. PTI SVS
