Congress wins two seats in Delhi; set for clean sweep in Delhi

New Delhi, May 16 (PTI) Union Minister of India Kapil
Sibal and Mahabal Mishra of Congress Saturday pulled out a
spectacular victory in Delhi where the party is all set to
sweep the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) polls.

Its candidates in all the other five seats are also
leading by a comfortable margin of over 36,000 votes as per
the trends available.

Sibal defeated Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Vijender
Gupta in Chandni Chowk with a hefty margin of 2,00,710 votes
while party's Poorvanchali face in the capital Mishra pulled
out a stunning victory in West Delhi seat, considered a BJP
stronghold.

Mishra toppled Delhi's Leader of Opposition Jagdish Mukhi
by a margin of 1,29,033 votes.

The party candidate also won the bypolls to Rohtas Nagar
Assembly seat.

Vipin Kumar of Congress defeated the BJP candidate by
over 23,000 votes in the by-elections to Rohtas Nagar Assembly
seat, which fell vacant after his father and Member of
Legislative Assembly (MLA) Ram Babu Sharma passed away. Kumar
overcame the challenge posed by BJP's Divya Jaiswal, former
Delhi Deputy Mayor.

Sibal's ministerial colleague Ajay Maken is ahead of
BJP's Vijay Goel in New Delhi by 44,956 seats. Sibal and Maken
are the sitting MPs from Chandni Chowk and New Delhi.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's son Sandeep, who is
contesting from East Delhi, has a comfortable lead over his
nearest BJP rival ace cricketer Chetan Chouhan. Dikshit is
leading by 89,419 votes.

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) chief J P
Aggarwal, who replaced senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler
from North-East Delhi seat after his candidature became a
controversy, was leading over his BJP rival B L Sharma by
64,940 votes.

Interestingly, in North-East seat, Haji Dilshad Ali, the
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate who withdrew from the race
in favour of Congress two days ahead of the polling, has
polled 25,981 votes.

In South Delhi, Ramesh Kumar, who replaced his brother
and Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, is leading against his BJP's
Ramesh Bidhuri by 36,500 votes.

Sitting Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Krishna Tirath
is also leading in North-West Delhi seat over her nearest BJP
rival by 67,815 votes.

In the last elections, Congress has won six seats.

An elated DPCC chief Aggarwal told PTI that the
performance of Congress in Delhi and other metros clearly
showed that "be it urban India or the rural, Congress is the
peoples choice".

"The victory is a result of hardwork of Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. The BJP
indulged in a negative campaigning. We were positive in our
campaign from the word go," Aggarwal said. PTI
