Malaysia Reelected As Apcert Chairman For 2021-2022
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- Malaysia through CyberSecurity Malaysia has been elected as the chairman and a member of the Asia Pacific Computer Emergency Response Team (APCERT) for the 2021- 2022 term.
The election was held at the APCERT annual general meeting which was conducted online on Sept 29 and it was hosted by the APCERT secretariat and Japan Coordination Centre / Computer Emergency Response Team (JCC/CERT).
CyberSecurity Malaysia in a statement said with the appointment, Malaysia was once again given the trust to lead APCERT Steering Committee which comprised Computer ERP teams from countries such as the People’s Republic of China, Japan, Australia, Sri Lanka and Taiwan.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa in the same statement said global cooperation such as APCERT is important in the effort to combat cyber threats and attacks because the issue of cyber security is a global issue which can occur across border.
He added that the involvement of Malaysia through CyberSecurity Malaysia in the international arena is very significant as it showed the seriousness of the country in building capacity and efficiency to enhance and empower the cyber ecosystem.
"A cooperation platform such as APCERT would produce digital economic value creation as well as being a reference hub for fostering trust, long-term understanding and business collaboration between countries,” he said.
Meanwhile, CyberSecurity Malaysia board of directors chairman, General (R) Mohd Azumi Mohamed who present in the meeting said the election was a recognition of the leadership, technical expertise and commitment of CyberSecurity Malaysia in the region especially when the world is facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said in the same statement that Malaysia as APCERT chairman would drive collaboration in delivering reliable services especially in handling large scale cyber attacks as well as to reduce the related impacts apart from giving quick response in any cyber incident.
CyberSecurity Malaysia, a cyber security technical and expert agency under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia was the founding organisation of APCERT in 2002 and remained as a member of APCERT Steering Committee since its establishment and will continue until 2023.
This is the fourth time the agency was elected as APCERT chairman for 2021-2022 after the first election (2007), second (2019-2020) and third (2020-2021).
