Govt tightens screening of intl passengers for swine flu
New Delhi/Chennai, May 17 (PTI) Government Sunday
tightened screening of passengers from countries affected by
swine flu, a day after one person tested positive for the
dreaded disease in Hyderabad and a mother-son duo in Chennai
were admitted with suspected symptoms of the disease.
A woman and her son, who has been studying in the US,
were admitted to a government hospital in Coimbatore with
suspected symptoms of swine flu.
According to hospital sources, the 26-year-old youth, who
was studying in a University in New Jersey, complained of
fever and throat pain after he returned from Bangalore two
days ago.
His mother, a resident of Coimbatore, had also complained
of similar symptoms and after contacting a senior health
department official, they got themselves admitted to the
hospital Sunday evening.
They have been kept under observation in an isolated ward
and arrangements were being made to send their blood samples
to Delhi for tests, the sources said.
India recorded its first case of swine flu, with a
23-year-old man who flew from New York to Hyderabad testing
positive for the virus.
The patient, who travelled from the US via Dubai, arrived
in Hyderabad on May 13 and was isolated as he reported fever
and his samples were sent for a detailed examination.
All local contacts of the infected man have been
traced and their health status is being monitored. The locals
are afebrile, the Government said.
The ministry has asked Emirates Airline, by which the
youth had travelled, to provide a list of passengers who
travelled in close proximity to the infected man.
All passengers who travelled in the connecting flight
from Dubai to Hyderabad have been identified and have also
been advised to remain under home quarantine for a further
period of seven days.
They have also been asked to self monitor for
influenza like illness, including fever, cough, difficulty in
breathing and to provide their contact details to the
government.
Meanwhile, three more samples which had been sent for
testing to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases
(NICD) have been found to be negative, NICD Director Shivlal
said.
The Joint Monitoring Group constituted for controlling
the spread of swine flu would be meeting in the capital
tomorrow to chart out a future course and action and take
stock of the present strategy. PTI
