Two Venues In KL To Be Lit Up In Hungary's Flag Colours

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- On Saturday (Oct 23), the Saloma Link Bridge here will be illuminated with the colours of Hungary's national flag - red, white and green - to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and the freedom fight. The Embassy of Hungary in Malaysia in a statement to Bernama said that the bridge will be illuminated in the colours of the Hungarian flag between 7 pm to 12 am. "Kuala Lumpur’s new attraction known as the Saloma Link, connects the old and the new, the traditional village of Kampung Baru with the modern business district of KLCC. This year, the embassy will use technology as a new form of commemoration," the statement said. Besides that, on the same day tribute will be paid to the heroes of ’56 through a video display “Where Heroes Are Not Forgotten, There Will Always Be New Ones” on the wall of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall building in Jalan Raja Laut. The video display will be held at 10pm, 10.15pm, 10.30pm, 10.45pm and 11.30pm. In the autumn of 1956, students of this Central European country issued a list of demands, among others, calling for the end of the one-party state of the communist regime and the holding of free and democratic parliamentary elections. The statement recalled that what started off as a peaceful demonstration turned into a fiery revolution. On Nov 4th, Soviet troops invaded Hungary to stop the revolution. On the Hungarian side, casualties were estimated to be 2,500 dead and some 20,000 wounded. In the aftermath, 22,000 Hungarians were sentenced to prison, 13,000 interned in labour camps and 229 executed. -- BERNAMA
