HARUM MANIS MANGO SET TO ENTER JAPANESE MARKET NEXT YEAR

By Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) -- The Harum Manis mango which originates from Perlis is set to enter the Japanese market next year, Japanese Ambassador Masahiko Horie said.

Describing the mango as one of the best in the world, Horie said there were
Malaysians ready to export the fruit and Japanese importers who were keen to
import them.

"The mango is one of the best mango in the world and very delicious. The
fruit is very thick and very sweet. Eventhough the outer skin is green but the
inside is very ripe," he told Bernama at the 45th Ikebana Gliterring Sapphire
Celebration Annual Exhibition and Demonstration here Thursday.

Also present was the honorary patron Yoko Horie, who is the wife of the
ambassador.

The ambassador said he was in Perlis recently on the invitation of the Ruler

of Perlis in conjunction with the royal's birthday and had been served with the
mango.

The Harum Manis fruits are found only during the months of May and June.

Horie said he expected the fruit become popular in Japan as it was very soft
and delicate.

He also said that as the mango could only last for two months, Malaysian
exporters must address the matter.
