Six-hour match sets time record in Korean baseball
SEOUL, May 22 (Yonhap) -- A pro baseball game held in the southern city of Gwangju Thursday night lasted nearly 6 hours, going down in history as Korea's longest-running match ever, the nation's baseball governing body said Friday.
According to the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), the LG Twins and KIA Tigers
engaged in a grueling see-saw game at the Gwangju ball park for 12 innings,
lasting 5 hours and 58 minutes, the longest in Korea's 28-year history of pro
baseball.
The game, which began at 6:31 p.m. Thursday and ended 29 minutes after midnight,
ended in a 13-13 draw after fierce performances by both teams, KBO officials
said.
The previous record for the longest-running game was 5 hours and 51 minutes set
in an 18-inning game between the Doosan Bears and Hanhwa Eagles in September last
year.
KIA led the home game 13-10 until the eighth inning but LG scored three runs in
the top of the ninth, leading the match into extra innings.
The two teams could not add runs and the game ended 13-13 in the 12th.
The KIA-LG match was the second "two-day" game this season and the fourth in the
KBO history.
A pro baseball game automatically ends in the 12th inning regardless of a draw
under new KBO rules implemented this year.
