Speaker meets with UN General Assembly President

Manama, Jan. 24 (BNA): Speaker Fawzia bint Abdullah Zainal met with Abdulla Shahid President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly. She congratulated him on assuming the presidency of the current session of the UN’s General Assembly, stressing that Bahrain has always been keen to support UN’s efforts. The speaker affirmed that Bahrain supports efforts for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and in the world, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Zainal referred to the government’s initiatives, headed by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in promoting the values of tolerance, coexistence and respect for pluralism, and the importance of integrating international stances to combat terrorism, violence and extremism. She noted that Bahrain’s approach makes human rights a main priority, highlighting the steps taken by the Kingdom in implementing its reform approach, such as expanding the application of alternative sanctions, providing rehabilitation programs and the open prisons initiative. The speaker stressed the importance of HM the King’s statement during the UN’s General Assembly session two years ago, which calls the importance of cooperation to confront all challenges.
