Gwangju wins right to host 2015 Summer Universiade

SEOUL, May 24 (Yonhap) -- Gwangju, a metropolis in South Korea's southwest, was
selected as the host of the 2015 Summer Universiade in a voting held by the
International University Sports Federation, also known as FISU, in Belgium on
Saturday (local time), city officials here said Sunday.

Gwangju, about 350 km south of Seoul, defeated Canada's Edmonton and Taiwan's
Taipei to grab the hosting right for the biennial sports festival for college
athletes, said the officials.
With its successful bid, Gwangju will become the third South Korean city to host
the Universiade games, following Muju and Daegu, the venues of the 1997 Winter
Universiade and the 2003 Summer Universiade, respectively.
According to Gwangju officials, the city's pledge to form a unified team between
the two Koreas may have impressed many of the FISU executives prior to their
voting.
