SIU Chief receives Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon

Manama, Feb. 14 (BNA): Acting Attorney General and Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Chief Mohammed Khalid Al Hazza has today received Special Envoy of the UK Prime Minister and the Minister of State for South and Central Asia, United Nations, and the Commonwealth at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon. UK Deputy Ambassador to Bahrain Stuart Summers also attended the meeting which discussed the role of the unit in protecting human rights within the penal judiciary, being a unique independent judicial panel of its kind in the region. The British minister was briefed about theinternal structure of the unit, different sections amd division of its people, and the update procedures aimed to continue carrying out its work in accordance with international conventions, standards and protocols, including the Istanbul Protocol for the Investigation and Documentation of Cases of Torture and Ill-Treatment. The meeting also focused on enhancing joint cooperation, exchanging practices and developing the capabilities of the SIU members, in light span years of fruitful coordination and close cooperation in various fields.
