KT opens offices for deals in Rwanda, Algeria
SEOUL, May 25 (Yonhap) -- South Korean telecom giant KT Corp. said Monday it has
recently opened offices in Rwanda and Algeria for managing projects to build
advanced communications networks there.
KT, South Korea's top Internet provider, won a 49 billion won (US$39 million)
contract in October 2008 to build a nationwide communications network in Rwanda,
which aims to become a hub in Africa for information technology.
In January, the company also clinched a 33.6-billion won project for a broadband
wireless network in Sidi Abdela, located 25 km west of the Algerian capital city
of Algiers.
"The offices will be tasked with handling the projects," KT said. "WiBro, a
homegrown wireless Internet service, will play a central role in the construction
of communications networks in those countries."
KT, also South Korea's No. 2 mobile carrier, said it is looking to expand its
business to other African nations.
Africa is one of the fastest growing regions in the world in terms of the number
of subscribers to Internet services, rising 45 percent from 2002 to 2007,
according to market analysts.
