Climate Affairs Special Envoy participates in UNSC's open debate on climate finance

Manama, Mar. 12 (BNA): Special Envoy for Climate Affairs and Chief Executive of the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE), Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Daina, participated in the high-level open debate held by the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Climate Finance for Sustaining Peace and Security. Chaired by UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Special Envoy for Climate Change, Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the meeting was also attended by the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, and COP26 President, Alok Sharma, in addition to the UNSC members. Addressing the meeting, Dr. Bin Daina asserted that thanks to the far-sighted strategic vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and the constant follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Bahrain has adopted the National Adaptation Investment Plan (NAIP) process to increase its resilience in the sectors of water, agriculture, biodiversity and urban development. He also highlighted the keenness of HM the King’s Personal Representative and SCE President, His Highness Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, to devote the SCE’s efforts to achieve sustainable development goals through the implementation of many projects, programmes and environmental studies, noting that the Kingdom is preparing a study to assess the impact of sea-level rise on Bahrain's coastal areas, and to develop a long-term plan based on the volume of risks and priority areas requiring protection, as well as protecting desalination and power plants to maintain energy and water security. He also highlighted the role of climate finance in maintaining peace, and in particular the importance of the commitment of developed countries to pay $100 billion in financing for developing countries to mitigate the effects of climate change, in addition to their payment of $40 billion to the Adaptation Fund.
