S. Korean president calls for joint efforts to fight climate change

SEOUL, May 30 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has called on
Southeast Asian Nations to form an alliance with his country to fight climate
change, saying their joints efforts will bring the world closer to a solution,
Lee's presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said Saturday.
The call came as Lee is set to hold a special summit in the southern resort
island of Jeju with leaders of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian
Nations (ASEAN) next week.
"If we bring Korea's green technology, which is a fusion of information
technology, bio technology and nano technology, together with ASEAN's limitless
opportunities in green growth, we can move a step closer to realizing our common
vision of creating 'low carbon smart cities'," the South Korean president said in
a special article for newspapers in the ASEAN countries.
The article was published by 13 major dailies, including Thailand's Bangkok Post
and the Straits Times of Singapore, on May 25-30, according to Cheong Wa Dae.
In the article, released here Saturday, Lee said climate change was a "daunting
challenge" that requires global efforts.
The South Korean leader called for increased cooperation in research activities
to develop alternative sources of energy, saying the countries' over-reliance on
fossil fuels was a "mistake."
"Through these and much more, Korea and ASEAN can become the world's pioneering
leaders. We can become the world's green research hub that introduces new
innovations and turn green ideas into reality," Lee said.
The South Korean president was expected to renew his call for joint efforts to
fight climate change when he meets with ASEAN leaders for a special summit that
will commemorate the 20th anniversary of establishing a dialogue partnership
between the sides.
The Korea-ASEAN summit will be held two days from Monday, involving leaders from
all 10 member nations of ASEAN -- Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia,
Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam.
