S. Korea offers mobile TV service to ASEAN leaders during summit

JEJU ISLAND, South Korea, May 31 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has launched a mobile TV
broadcasting service for leaders and their delegation from the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) participating in the upcoming summit talks to be
held here this week.
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) said that it established a mobile
Internet protocol TV broadcasting network based on wireless broadband (WiBro) on
Saturday around the International Convention Center where the two-day summit is
to take place.
Around three to four mobile handsets will be distributed each to 10 ASEAN member
states, enabling them to view a total of 12 channels, including real-time TV
programs from their own countries as well as South Korea's English TV channel,
Arirang, the telecom watchdog said.
Summit schedules and data on previous conference and other contents could also be
viewed through video-on-demand, it added.
WiBro is a homegrown wireless Internet technology that ensures high-speed
Internet connectivity even when a user is in motion. South Korea is trying to
expand exports of its WiBro technology to countries seeking to build Internet
infrastructure.
Heads of state from South Korea and 10 ASEAN members will attend the summit on
the southern resort island of Jeju, an event that marks the 20th anniversary of
their "dialogue partnership." The two-day summit will kick off on Monday.
The ASEAN member countries are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia,
Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam.
