Seoul shares open higher on Wall Street rallies
SEOUL, June 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks started stronger Tuesday as U.S.
markets rallied on prospects of an economic recovery, shrugging off a bankruptcy
filing by General Motors Corp., analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) climbed 19.39 points, or
1.37 percent, to 1,434.49 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
U.S. markets closed sharply higher on Monday as investors focused on improving
economic data, shaking off a bankruptcy protection filing by ailing GM. The Dow
Jones industrial average advanced 2.6 percent and the tech-laden Nasdaq composite
index jumped 3.06 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,232.6 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:15 a.m.,
up 4.6 won from Monday's close.
