IFAD supports fish sector in Yemen with $11 mln



SANA'A, June 02 (Saba) - International Fund for Agricultural
Development (IFAD) announced on Tuesday allocating a grant of $11
million to support the fish sector in Yemen.

According to IFAD, the grant will be devoted for developing
fishermen's societies in the coastal provinces through providing
infrastructure services such as electricity, water and others as
well as training fishermen on the modern fishing ways and how to
deal with fish products.

During his meeting with Director of Yemen's Portfolio in IFAD Omar
Dhafer, Minister of Fisheries Mohammad Shamlan valued the fund's
support to Yemen in different fields, affirming the pressing need of
fish sector to allocate more amounts for finalizing the
infrastructure projects.

The Minister Shamlan confirmed that his Ministry would work on
providing information and statistics of fish sector to enable the
fund to carry out the project as soon as possible.

In return, IFAD's official said that the project's construction
would start next December, confirming the fund's keenness on
boosting the cooperation with Yemen in field of fisheries wealth
development, which is one of the most important potentials of the
local and world food security.

Dhafer pointed out that the main objective of the project is to
develop fishermen's societies in the coastal areas and lift them out
of poverty through developing their professional abilities and
providing them with the essential requirements required for their
work.
