S. Korean IT exports fall 17 pct in May
By Lee Joon-seung
SEOUL, June 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korean exports of information technology (IT)
products fell 17.0 percent on-year in May as the global economic slump dampened
overseas sales, a government report showed Wednesday.
Exports of semiconductors, mobile phones and other IT products reached US$9.66
billion last month, with imports dropping 22.2 percent to $4.90 billion for a
surplus of $4.76 billion, according to the report by the Ministry of Knowledge
Economy.
While May's outbound shipments fell off compared to the year before, total export
volume has increased monthly over the past five months, the report said. Exports
in May also surpassed the $9 billion mark for the second consecutive month.
The ministry, in charge of the country's industrial policies and trade promotion,
added that while exports have contracted vis-a-vis 2008, negative growth has
slowed in recent months.
"Minus growth reached 39.2 percent in December but fell under the 20 percent mark
in April," said Seo Seok-jin, head of the ministry's IT policy coordination
division.
Seo added that exports of mobile phones, semiconductors and display panels
continued to increase during the cited month compared with April, a sign that
conditions may be improving.
Compared with 2008, however, exports of mobile phones and display panels were
down 11.1 percent and 7.1 percent, respectively, while semiconductor exports
dropped 22.1 percent, according to the report.
China was the biggest importer of Korean-made IT products, buying $3.75 billion
worth, followed by the United States with $1.45 billion and the European Union
with $1.37 billion.
Outbound shipments to Japan and Latin America stood at $540 million and $590
million, respectively.
Imports of electronic parts and components, meanwhile, hit $3.05 billion in May,
with imports of computers and related products recording $520 million.
IT exports totaled $42.51 billion between January and May with imports reaching
$22.72 billion during the period for a surplus of $19.79 billion.
