Seoul stocks start up on U.S. rallies

SEOUL, June 5 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks opened 0.40 percent higher Friday as investor sentiment got a boost from overnight U.S. rallies, analysts said.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) climbed 5.51 points to
1,383.65 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
Wall Street rallied on Thursday after the U.S. government reported that the
number of workers continuing to receive unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell
for the first time in 20 weeks. The Down Jones industrial average rose 0.86
percent and the tech-laced Nasdaq surged 1.32 percent.
Most large-cap shares traded in positive territory, with tech shares leading the
overall rally.
The local currency was trading at 1,249.65 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:15
a.m., up 1.35 won from Thursday's close.
