Qatar University Organizes Workshop on Al Zubarah Archeological Site

Doha, October 23 (QNA) - Gulf Studies Center at Qatar University organized a workshop titled: " Al Zubarah:Prospects and Challenges for the Next Decade" with the attendance of a host of participants and those who are more interested in heritage, archeology and culture affairs, in collaboration with Qatar Museums and Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. The workshop candidly forms a series of academic cooperation to prepare the national report on Al Zubarah site which was included in the list of the global heritage of United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2013. On this occasion, HE Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti stated that Al Zubarah city was famous for pearl fishing and with wide trade relationships with the rest of Arab gulf region countries and the world, noting the significance of Al Zubarah after it had been included in the list of UNESCO, praising the importance of this workshop that would primarily enhance the ability to clarify this historic and archeological site and contribute to preserving and enhancing the local heritage, in addition to maintaining the vital connection of the Qatari people to their past. HE President of Qatar University Dr. Hassan Al-Derham noted that the workshop will represent a platform for the participants to communicate and share information about the site, with the focus on the future research projects in Al Zubarah leading to raise the awareness of this archeological site and its historic vicinities in Qatar and the gulf region. For his part, the Representative for the Gulf States and Yemen and Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Doha Salah El Din Zaki Khaled underlined that the inclusion of the Al Zubarah in UNESCO list of global heritage requires works to preserve it from all factors that could potentially harm the site, including environmental aspects etc, noting the enormous efforts made by UNESCO to preserve the cultural global heritage.
