OIC Chief welcomes Dakar Accord on Mauritania
Jeddah, June 07, SPA -- The Secretary General of the Organization of
the Islamic Conference (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu,
welcomed the Dakar Framework Agreement signed on June 4, 2009 in
Nouakchott - the Mauritanian capital, by the three major political
parties.
By embracing a consensual solution, the Agreement puts an end to the
constitutional crisis that has plagued Mauritania since 6th august
2008 and opens the door for a return of the constitutional order in
the country, according to a press release issued here yesterday.
The Secretary General seizes this opportunity to pay a high tribute
to President Sidi Mohamed Ould Sheikh Abdallah and to the various
political parties and formations in Mauritania for their patriotism,
their sense of responsibility and their commitment to serve the high
interests of the country and live up to the legitimate aspirations of
the Mauritanian people by holding free, fair and transparent
presidential elections that would allow for the restoration of the
constitutional order, democracy and the rule of law in Mauritania.
Ihsanoglu expressed his appreciation for the personal contribution
of Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal and current
Chairman of the OIC, and his tireless efforts as 'neighbor of good
will' in making possible the consensual agreement between the various
Mauritanian political actors.
The Secretary General has expressed the satisfaction of the OIC for
having actively contributed to all the initiatives and meetings of
the International Contact Group on Mauritania, of which the OIC is a
member, in a bid to work out a solution consensually approved by all
concerned parties.
